Chapter 15

Melanie had always loved Logan’s mom. Alice was very much like her own mom, caring, warm and always willing to help. Qualities that she hoped she also had. Dinner was mostly finished, so Alice offered her a glass of wine and she readily accepted.

“Thank you for having me tonight.”

“You’re always welcome here. Whether Logan comes or not.”

“I think you might be seeing more of him.”

Alice looked toward her and picked up her own wine glass. “I hope so. We’ve missed him.”

“Me too.” She was about to say more, but she heard a door shut, telling her that Logan and his dad were on their way in.

“Smells great in here,” Logan said, walking into the kitchen.

“When my son comes for dinner, it’s only right that I make his favorite food.”

“Meatloaf?” Logan questioned and Melanie could see his eyes light up.

“And mashed potatoes.”

“Ahh, man. You are a God among women, mom.”

“Don’t I know it.”

Melanie laughed. Alice turned to the oven and Logan’s dad, Charlie went to the fridge. With both their backs to them she mouthed to Logan, “Everything okay?”

He nodded, accepting the beer that his dad handed him.

He didn’t look upset or unhappy. The opposite actually. He was almost radiating in happiness.

“Everybody grab something, I think we are ready to eat.” The food was transferred to the kitchen table and they all began eating.

“So I have some possible news,” Logan said. His eyes found hers and she assumed this was what he had been so happy about earlier.

“But first, mom, dad, I have decided to stay in Cedarville full-time. No more assignments that take me away for weeks and months at a time.”

“Glad to hear it,” Charlie said.

“Along with that though, I had to find something to do to not only keep me busy but to earn money. And today I think I might have come up with it.”

“Really?” Melanie asked. She was excited for him even if it would mean that all the work she had been doing the last few days would go to waste.

“I think I am going to open an art gallery right here in Cedarville.”

Mel was stunned speechless at his words.

“Oh honey, that’s great,” Alice said.

“You’re thinking big aren’t you,” his dad said.

“I’m not used to doing things any other way.” He turned and looked at her. “What do you think?”

“I –” she started and stopped. “I think it’s great, Logan. But when did you decide this?”

“I had all this time to think the last two days.” The sly smile he gave her indicated that he was talking about the fact that she had brushed him off the last two nights. And while he might think that she hadn’t wanted to see him because they were moving too fast or hell, because they weren’t moving fast enough. It was more because she was busy contacting people to see about getting him in galleries herself.

“Where would the studio be?” she asked.

“Do you remember the old appliance store? From when we were kids?”

“Right in the center of town? Yeah.
